A resume with no work experience isn't empty — it's focused. Clients hiring VAs aren't looking for 10-year careers. They're looking for three things: can you communicate clearly, can you learn quickly, and can you be trusted with their business. This guide shows you exactly how to structure a one-page VA resume that gets you interviews even when your only "experience" is a BPO job, a college internship, or helping your family's sari-sari store.
Before we fix yours, let's name the three mistakes clients see every day:
One page. Five sections. In this order:
Top of the page, centered or left-aligned. Include:
Skip: your full address, birth date, marital status, religion, and "Filipino citizen." These are standard on PH-style resumes but unnecessary (and sometimes illegal to include) for international clients.
2–3 sentences. Your best opportunity to set the tone. Use this formula:
[Your specialization] with [relevant background or learning]. Experienced in [2–3 specific tools]. Known for [one trait that matters — reliability, quick turnaround, proactive communication].
Example for a beginner with BPO background:
"Customer support specialist transitioning into remote VA work. 3 years of experience managing 80+ customer tickets per day in a BPO setting, now certified in HubSpot and Gorgias. Known for reducing first-response time and maintaining calm, professional tone under pressure."
Example for a college graduate with no work experience:
"Organized, detail-focused graduate with hands-on training in Canva, Google Workspace, and Meta Business Suite. Managed social media for a campus organization (8,000+ followers) and supported inventory systems for a family retail store. Looking to support online coaches and e-commerce founders with content and admin."
Do not write "Excel, Word, Canva, Google Docs, Shopify, Trello, Asana, Notion, Slack, Zoom." That's a list. It says nothing.
Group skills by category:
Pick only the skills relevant to the job you're applying for. A social media VA application shouldn't list Shopify admin.
This is where most Filipino beginners get stuck. If you've never had a VA job, rename this section to "Relevant Projects & Experience." Then list:
Format each entry like this:
[Role / Project Name] | [Organization or "Self-Initiated"] | [Dates]
Aim for 3–5 bullet points per role. No long paragraphs.
Simple. School name, degree, year graduated (or expected). Include GPA only if it's above 3.5. Do not include grade school or high school.
If you've taken relevant certifications (HubSpot Academy, Coursera, Google Digital Garage, Meta Blueprint), add them under "Certifications" below Education. Free certifications are welcome — they show initiative.
