Most Filipino freelancers who try to use AI for cover letters end up worse off than when they wrote them by hand. That is because 90% of cover letters produced by ChatGPT or Claude read exactly the same — generic, overly formal, padded with phrases like "I am thrilled to apply" and "I would love the opportunity to bring my unique skills to your team." Hiring managers see 200 of those per post. Yours gets skipped.
The good news: AI can absolutely help you write cover letters that get replies — but only if you use it correctly. This guide shows the exact prompts, edits, and techniques Filipino freelancers use to turn AI from a slop machine into a reply-rate multiplier.
Straight-out-of-the-box AI cover letters share three fatal problems:
The fix is not to stop using AI. It is to use AI as a research and structure tool, then write the actual letter yourself. Or — better — give the AI so much context that its output becomes indistinguishable from a human letter.
Every reply-getting cover letter has three parts:
Total length: 5-7 sentences. Under 150 words. Clients are scanning on phones between other tasks — if your letter needs scrolling, you lost.
Here is the prompt template Filipino VAs use to get drafts that require only 20% editing:
"You are helping me apply for a remote freelance job. I will paste the full job post below. Write a cover letter that:1. Opens with a specific observation about their business or job post — not a greeting. Show I actually read it. 2. Mentions ONE specific experience I have that directly solves their stated problem. 3. Closes with my availability and rate in one short sentence. 4. Is under 150 words. 5. Uses plain conversational English — no phrases like 'thrilled,' 'excited,' 'unique skills,' 'passionate,' 'dive into,' or 'bring to your team.' 6. Does NOT start with 'Dear Hiring Manager' — use their name if in the post, or skip the greeting. 7. Reads like a human Filipino freelancer wrote it, not AI.My background: [paste 3 bullet points about your actual experience] Target rate: [your rate] Job post: [paste full job post]"
Run this in Claude or ChatGPT. You will get a draft that is 80% usable. The other 20% is your voice edits.
Even with a good prompt, AI will still insert a few red-flag phrases. Always cut or replace these:
After these edits, your letter should sound like how a real Filipino professional speaks in a work email — clear, direct, respectful but not stiff.
AI-drafted (bad):
"Dear Hiring Manager, I am thrilled to apply for your Virtual Assistant position. As a passionate and results-driven freelancer from the Philippines, I would love the opportunity to leverage my unique skills to help your team succeed. I am proficient in various administrative tasks and am excited to dive into your projects..."
After editing (good):
"Hi Marcus — saw your post about needing someone to handle inbox triage and Slack management for your e-commerce agency. I have done this exact work for a Shopify brand for 14 months; their founder now spends 30 min/day on email instead of 2 hours.I have availability for ~25 hours/week starting next Monday. Rate is $12/hr. Happy to share a 3-minute Loom of how I handled their inbox if useful.— Joan, Cebu PH"
Which one would you reply to?
Different clients expect different tones:
Ask Claude or ChatGPT to rewrite your draft for each market — but always edit the output. The AI's version of "casual Australian" is often a caricature.
This is not technically about the cover letter, but it is the single highest-ROI move Filipino freelancers use. At the end of your letter, include:
"I recorded a 90-second Loom showing exactly how I would handle your [first task]: [loom.com/share/xxx]"
Record the Loom on your phone or laptop. Show your screen doing the actual work — triaging an email, drafting a response, setting up an Airtable. This puts you in the top 5% of applicants instantly. Reply rates for Filipino VAs using this tactic often double from 10% to 20%+.
Do not ask AI to:
